Something came up in Alex’s Brainstorming Session.

We were accessing a fellow student’s site and he asked how you can put up an icon on the tabs like below:

This is Erwin Chua in Manga Mode...

The little square thing that looks like an anime character is what we call a Favicon.

You can also have a favicon on your browser tab, such as the one I have on my Firefox browser:

In technonalia jargon, a favicon (short for “favorites icon” and also known as a page icon), is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage that is displayed in the browser address bar next to a site’s URL.

Now, it’s easy to set one up, and I really love things that only look complicated. :D

Here’s how.

1. Pick an image you would like to put in your tab or url address.

2. Reduce the size of the image to 100×100 pixels using the MS Picture Manager or other image manipulation software.

3. Go to this site called the Favicon Generator

Access the site here.

4. Browse for your image on your pc.

5. Click the “Generate Favicon!” button.

6. Download the generated favicon by clicking on “Click Here to Download Your Favicon!

7. Upload the favicon file (favicon.ico) to your root directory using Filezilla.

8. Copy the code below.

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://yourblogsite.com/favicon.ico?2″ type=”image/x-icon” />

9. Insert the code. If you’re using Wordpress, go to your administration section.

Click Design>Theme Editor and look for the Header.php file

Sample Header.php Section and Code

Paste the code under the <head> part of the html coding, as you can see above.

10. Save the code.

11. Refresh your blog. You’ll find the image on your tab and address bar showing. :)

If you find this useful, please sign up on my RSS feed for more updates on the sidebar or leave a nice comment to tell me what you want to learn.

Till then, have a good one!

Regards,

Erwin
